Our Lady of Loreto

A giant 17-meter (55-foot) statue of Our Lady of Loreto was built in 2017, atop the hill Gaj above Primosten, and is one of the largest shrines to the Virgin Mary in the world.

The unique statue is the work of Croatian architect Aron Varga and mosaic professor Milun Garcevic. It is made of eight concrete rings, lined with a mosaic of gold and silver leaves and stained glass, with the image of Our Lady adorned at the top with an old Croatian crown. The mosaic work and its effects are impressive, sparkling in the sunshine like millions of tiny crystals.

From the shrine venue, there is a breathtaking view of Primosten and the surrounding area. On a clear day, the monument is said to be visible from the facing coast of Italy. Visiting this place is definitely one of the best things to do in Primosten.

The Italian project ‘Cammini Lauretani’ has included Primosten’s Our Lady of Loreto in the international pilgrimage routes of Marian shrines associated with Our Lady of Loreto, side by side with Rome, Vienna, Krakow, Lisbon, Madrid, Paris…
